Today, the senate passed two critical bills in support of the state of New Hampshire’s Veterans, according to a press statement.
The first bill, SB 55, would provide private business employers with the ability to express a preference for hiring veterans and SB 75, which protects veterans from fraudulent trade practices that target our state’s veterans.
Sate Sen. Sharon Carson, R-Londonderry, released a statement following the passage of these bills.
“I commend my Senate colleagues for their full support of our veterans by passing two important bills that help us fulfill our responsibilities to provide services for our veterans,“ said Carson. “Veterans deserve the support of businesses in securing employment and companies should seek preference in hiring men and women who served our nation. I was prime sponsor for SB 55 which allows just that.
“In addition, I co-sponsored SB 75 which is critical in making sure our states Veterans, many of whom have been targeted by business scams, are protected from threats like these and are able to obtain the services they are entitled to.”

A close vote in the NH House went against the recently enacted buffer zone around abortion clinics: CONCORD — The House voted 170-159 to repeal the abortion clinic buffer zone law approved by lawmakers last year. Repeal supporters said the state law is nearly identical to the Massachusetts law the U.S. Supreme Court found unconstitutional last year because it restricts Constitutional rights to free speech and assembly. The outgunned people of Cornerstone, holding down NH's Christian Conservative wing of the GOP, celebrated the passage of HB 560 recently: Today the New Hampshire House voted to pass HB 560, which provides that unborn children are included in the the definition of homicide. This legislation has been long overdue in New Hampshire as families like that of the prime sponsor, Representative Leon Rideout, have been denied justice and closure. When a criminal or negligent action causes the death of another it is only right that the correct legal avenue be set in place for the perpetrator to be prosecuted, this bill establishes that avenue in the event that a wanted unborn child dies as a result of such action. If the bill passes the Senate New Hampshire will join thirty-eight other states that recognize a woman's right to a wanted pregnancy and protect unborn children. Dark Matter and Dark Energy by Alicia Ostriker My husband says dark matter is a reality Word comes by owl from the AP that House Republicans have passed several education bills recently, most prominently one to limiting the implementation of Common Core: The Republican-led House passed several bills Wednesday aimed at weakening aspects of the Common Core education standards and affirming the importance of local and parental control in education. Good and bad news on the effort to better deal with mental health issues. Governor Hassan: Continuing efforts to implement last year's landmark mental health settlement and strengthen community-based mental health care in New Hampshire, Governor Maggie Hassan today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority (New Hampshire Housing) an $8.6 million federal grant to provide rental assistance for people with severe mental illness. U.S. Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) this week re-introduced the Mental Health First Aid Act, bipartisan legislation to expand mental health first aid training and help the public identify, understand, and address crisis situations safely. The bill is being cosponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Chris Coons (D-DE), Rob Portman (R-OH) Jack Reed (D-RI), Dean Heller (R-NV), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). The state’s mental health settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice and funding in 2013 for elements of the 2008 10-year mental health plan are regularly cited as examples of how well New Hampshire is meeting its obligations to citizens with mental illness. However, while $28 million was appropriated two years ago, it appears that nearly $12 million of that investment has not been made. The programs which were authorized and funded – but which have not been implemented – include: Mark Hayward of the Union Leader filed the following story from an undisclosed location ten stories below the surface of Wilton. Moonlighting state workers started getting overtime pay for their second, part-time state job in early January, once the state decided it was a single employer and realized overtime rules would apply across state agencies, a spokesman for Gov. Maggie Hassan said on Wednesday. Remember this attack ad from October 2014? Frank Guinta claims Carol Shea Porter is LYING about him. He claims he's been cleared by the House Ethics Committee. State Senator Lou D'Allesandro recently penned an attack on our current campaign finance system while his limousine crashed through the streets of Manchester pursued by black clad motorcyclists. Open government is not owned by anyone but the people. When a citizen in my district chooses to speak his or her mind, that person can walk through the doors of the State House without being stopped or questioned and can walk directly into my office. My door is always open. As New Hampshire citizens, we believe this is right because we believe that the Capitol is the people’s house and that our job as legislators is to serve the people. I try to embody this belief and work very hard to respond to my constituents, even stopping in the hallways between sessions to hear what they have to say. If we disagree, we might even have a debate. Such respect and openness to our constituents is the envy of other states, where the citizenry may not have as direct access to their elected officials. Senator Shaheen took a shot at her colleague's letter to Iran yesterday: “For more than half a century our foreign policy has been driven by the idea that partisan politics stops at the water’s edge and I was disappointed to see this bedrock principle of our democracy compromised yesterday. This letter represented an unprecedented and dangerous attempt to undermine sensitive negotiations that are designed to keep our country safe. I sincerely hope that this effort does not destroy attempts to reach a diplomatic agreement on Iran’s nuclear program as negotiations enter a critical period.” |
